Year R - dressing in national costume or colours of flag

On Thursday 19th January the children from Year R dressed up in a national costume or in colours of a flag.  It was lovely that the children could name so many different countries and say hello in many languages.  During the morning the children made a flag, drew pictures of clothes that were special to them and main collages of their favourite foods form around the world.  In the afternoon the children tried foods from England, Mexico, China and India.  It was lovely to see all children willing to try new foods.  The poppadums were a real favourite.  One child described them as the tastiest crispies he had ever had!

Civic Award

The Civic Award is an opportunity for children in Year 2 to show some added responsibility by completing some ‘jobs’ at home and at school. It is a taster for the Duke of Edinburgh Scheme which is undertaken within the secondary school setting.

Children who chose to participate in the Civic Award need to complete an ‘in school’ job and an ‘at home job’ for 15 minutes per week per job. They also need to have a hobby that they do and are able to talk/write about or photograph. This hobby may be 1 they are already doing such as football or a new one such as needle work or baking.

The children complete a scrap book to demonstrate their achievements. After the 12 weeks have been completed the children plan and fund a little trip.

This year 34 Hollybrook Infant school children completed the Civic Award and had their certificates presented to them by Mr R Honeybone.

The children completed jobs at school such as helping clear the hall after lunch, sharpening pencils and shredding. At home they did jobs such as emptying the dishwasher, putting the washing away, putting the bins out, keeping their bedroom tidy!

We had many different hobbies presented to us as well. There was piano playing, karate, football, baking, sewing and caring for a corn snake

All the children thoroughly enjoyed planning their trip to the Sports Centre and funded playing mini golf by doing an ’extra’ job at home.

Well done to everyone who completed the Civic Award.

Please check our gallery out for pictures of the children.
